Small sculptures that portrayed individual saints, the Holy Family, and narrative scenes were popular objects for facilitating prayer and devotion in Peru. The province of Huamanga, now Ayacucho, is known for its alabaster, which is easily carved. Beginning in the late 17th c., artists from the region created religious figurines, establishing a long-standing artisanal tradition that continues to this day. This Huamanga stone carving depicts Joseph, Mary, and Jesus walking. The curved, diagonal lines and animated gestures of the Holy Family create a sense of movement, while their simple dress and peasant hats make them relatable and accessible to a diverse local population.
Las esculturas pequeñas de santos, la Sagrada Familia y escenas narrativas fueron populares en el Perú pues promovían la oración y la devoción. La provincia de Huamanga, hoy Ayacucho, es conocida por su alabastro, piedra fácil de tallar. A comienzos del siglo XVII los artistas de la región comenzaron a producir estatuillas religiosas. Esto dio paso a una larga tradición artesanal vigente hasta nuestros días. Esta talla de Huamanga muestra a José, María y Jesús caminando.
