Dazzling crosses fit onto a pole are used in Ethiopia to lead processions. The loops below this cross–through which long strips of cloth and streamers are often woven–strengthen its connection to the shaft. The imagery depicts the crucified Christ flanked by Mary and John the Evangelist. A panel with the Mother and Child above the cross signifies the incarnation. Unique to this example are the angels turned sideways that appear in each of the side panels. The reverse portrays the Mother and Child, possibly the Old Testament prophet Isaiah, and angels.
