One of her many versions of Girl with a Guitar, Laurencin’s etching showcases her love for representing women in different styles and forms. Laurencin was a 20th-century artist who grew up in Paris, France. In her art, she explored the relationship between sexuality, femininity, and the female figure. This etching is hand-colored, and depicts a woman with wings and a guitar, suggesting the intersectionality between mythological elements, the female form, and music. Her preference to paint and sketch women was revolutionary at the time for a woman artist. She uniquely painted and sketched her version of female beauty. Laurencin also was known for her interest in portraiture and miniature painting traditions, and played a major role in the male-dominated cubist avant-garde. Her works also reflected her interest in Japanese culture and art.
