A niche is a semi-circular apse or recess that is partially covered with a semi-dome. Niches were typically placed in churches, chapels, and wealthy private homes. This ornately carved and gilded example would have held a religious object of devotion, like the one seen here. The Baroque style of the niche proliferated in Latin America in the 18th c. and is characterized by its curved, spiral lines, floral decoration, and use of luxurious materials such as gold leaf.
