Description

Oil-on-canvas painting or The Annunciation by JOSEPH STELLA Although the principles of Futurism, Cubism, and Surrealism defined Stella’s mature work, his travels in Europe, North Africa and the Caribbean and his reverence for Old Masters prompted him to paint in many styles throughout his career. He is most often associated with his depictions of the Brooklyn Bridge, which celebrated the structure as a marvel of engineering. However, religious images were also a favorite theme, especially during the last decades of his life. Set within a paradisal landscape with tropical flora and colors, Stella’s enigmatic Annunciation reflects his deeply personal and symbolic interpretation of the moment in the Bible when Mary learns that she will bear the son of God.
