Description

Our Lady, Queen of Poland A celebrated Polish artist, Jan Styka specialized in monumental religious and nationalistic paintings. Painted in Krakow, Poland, Our Lady of Poland earned international acclaim following its exhibition abroad (including the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago). The painting depicts the Virgin enthroned with two angels holding aloft a crown. Surrounding her are the three estates of the Ancien Regime: the clergy, nobility and commoners, represented by the Bishop Konstanty Leon Sosnowski, an unidentified aristocrat, and 4 commoners. The man at the right holds a flag depicting St. Stanislaus the Martyr, a patron saint of Poland.
