Howard is a structural sculpture made purely of stainless steel. According to Engman’s wife, Nancy Porter, the name “Howard” was chosen by their son, who suggested that Engman’s sculptures have actual names. This sculpture consists of six steel rods, six quarter circles, and a square. Engman’s experimentation with rods stemmed from teaching techniques he used with his students at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania. As an art professor, Engman encouraged his students to use applicator sticks to create three-dimensional shapes, which allowed the students to experiment regardless of their level of technical knowledge.Label Type
