This painting is a copy of the famous Madonna della Sedia. The original painting, located in the Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy, was created by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael in the early 16th c. Famed Philadelphia artist Raphaelle Peale made the copy while on tour in Italy. The artist, who was friends with Fr. Barbelin, gave the Jesuit priest the painting as a gift.
