The main subject of this print is a building at Chuson-ji, a Buddhist temple in the village of Hiraizumi in northern Japan. This temple was essential to the area's spiritual and artistic life, and it was mentioned in the Oku no Hosomichi, a travel diary by the major Edo-era Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō. The print's muted palette and minimalistic style are characteristic of Saito's work. During this time of great experimentation with techniques, he worked through a decline in his creativity.
