19th- or early-20th-c. plaster cast of a marble frieze from 442-38 BCE Greece. The original sculpture is from north frieze of the Parthenon atop the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. It is currently housed in the British Museum, where it has been since 1816.

Interpretative Labels
Label
Horses and horsemanship dominate the Ionic, continuous frieze surrounding the exterior of the inner chamber of the Parthenon, the 5th-century BCE temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. Riders proceed in a cavalcade, overlapping one another to create the illusion of depth. The outermost horse at far left begins a new row of mounted riders. The background plane was originally painted blue, which helped visitors see individual horses and riders. The horses’ movements and postures convey the excitement of the procession, which was probably part of the Panathenaea (an annual Greek festival to honor Athena).
Los caballos y la destreza de sus jinetes dominan el friso jónico que bordea el exterior de la cámara interior del Partenón - el templo construido en el siglo V a. C. y dedicado a la diosa Atenea. Los jinetes avanzan en cabalgata y se sobreponen unos a otros creando una ilusión de profundidad. El caballo en el extremo izquierdo encabeza una nueva hilera de jinetes montados. El plano del fondo estuvo originalmente pintado de azul, lo que permitía distinguir a cada uno de los caballos y sus jinetes. Los movimientos y las posturas de los caballos transmiten la agitación de la cabalgata que posiblemente formó parte de la Panateneas (el festival griego anual en honor a Atenea)
