This pipe is a representative byproduct of the opium trade that began in Southeast Asia in the seventeenth century. Based on its design, it likely was produced in Burma (now Myanmar), part of “The Golden Triangle” region, a hotbed of opium production that includes Thailand and Laos. The pipe, however, may have been used for smoking a combination of opium and tobacco, which was introduced to Southeast Asia by Dutch traders during the eighteenth century.Label Type
