“Look, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name Him Emmanuel.” (Matthew 1:23)
The Christian significance placed upon Mary as divinely chosen to bear Jesus is highlighted throughout this piece. Marian symbols are used in various parts of the glasswork: Mary herself holds Madonna lilies, a fleur-de-lis pattern adorns the background, and the eight lobes radiating from the central panel contain what appear to be irises. All of these flowers represent different traits associated with Mary. Lilies, her purity; the iris, her Seven Sorrows, and the fleur-de-lis is a combination of both the lily and the iris. Young Jesus holds what appears to be an orb in his hand that, with his gesture of blessing, may reference his role as Salvator Mundi, or “savior of the world.”
The glass panel is designed as an octofoil, marked by the eight smaller segments focusing on a larger central point. It was produced by John Morgan & Sons sometime between 1875 and 1885, a company based in Brooklyn that remained active until at least 1925. The panel was originally housed in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Spring Garden St., which was constructed in 1849 and closed in 1995.
