This large bronze statue is one of a pair depicting male and female figures. Mexican artist, Javier Marín, is well known for his sculptures of the human form. He distorts anatomy to show the inevitable degradation of beauty and the human condition over time. The broken arms, ill-defined face, hunched stance, and saggy, wrinkled skin, accentuate the figure’s decaying life and beauty. While depictions of women span from nurturing to sensual, Marín draws attention to the harsh realities of human nature and creates an aura of unease for its viewer. Through its disfigured form, this statue transcends conventional portrayals of femininity and highlights the complex nature of womanhood.
