Early-20th-c. African warrior shield, made by the Ngombe peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The wood-framed shield has a tightly woven and reinforced reed surface. The reeds also wrap around the thin wooden edges. A flat handle with a projecting grip, carved from a single piece of wood, is attached with thickly wound string to the back. The long shield is slightly concave, with a double row of raised wood down its front center.Made/Created
