This monochrome, studio portrait is of a middle-aged man looking directly at the camera, wearing a black brimmed hat, black suit coat, white white button-down shirt, and black bow tie. He poses in front of a neutral background. Under his broad brimmed hat, a small amount of grey hair is visible. A white handkerchief is tucked into his breast pocket. He is wearing the worshipful master collar wth a large square pendant that is placed around his neck and goes down to the upper portion of his chest. The portrait only shows the sitter from the waist up, and he is angled so that his left shoulder is further forward than his right. On the back of the image, "Photograph by/ Judson Smith Studio/ Fredericksburg, VA" is stamped in black ink in the center of the page while "Wor. Carter G. Wells 1963/ born in 1923" is handwritten in black ink in the bottom right corner. There is more writing beneath it that is covered up by adhesive tape on the back, but it can be read as "Fredericksburg Lodge No. 4."
