Description

The Time Maiden consists of an all-cast aluminum body, and a walnut mounting board and cast face. This clock is the artist’‚s most unusual outline. The working weight drop mechanism that is typical in many Miller clocks runs about 30 seconds or so to demonstrate the workings of the piece. It is finished in enamel emulsions and weighs around 50 pounds. The jointed construction allows shocks from the falling weight and mechanism to be absorbed. Mark Miller is a Tallahassee artist (b. 1959) and has been building things since he was a child, beginning with his version of the robot from the television series Lost in Space. He hand builds the motors and casts them with little interest left for his completed pieces. His muse is the loud mechanical motions of his engines, of which he has made thousands. This piece was part of the exhibition of Mark Miller’s work, "Mark Miller: Past Times and Culture Revisited" at the Gadsden Arts Center, December 17, 2001-January 14, 2002.
