The Children's Unity Quilt was created during one of week of the 2016 Gadsden Arts Summer Art Camp that featured fiber arts. After learning about quilts and the history of quilting, they laid out their plan to design and make a quilt. Volunteer Wendy Adams brought a sewing machine, quilt scrapes and helpers to work with each camper to design their own quilt block! These blocks were sewn together in the classroom by Wendy and her helpers over two days. Then the kids spent time laying out the blocks on a design board to arrange them for the quilt top. The kids selected the pattern for the quilt parts (top, batting and bottom fabrics) and they selected a smiley face sewing pattern with rainbow thread. Wendy took the quilt home and completed the quilt by the end of the week so the kids could see their accomplishment. 22 kids of various ages, colors, and backgrounds designed this piece of art with their 56 unique blocks.Collection

Unity Quilt
This quilt was designed and made with great joy by the students, teachers, and volunteers in the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum 2016 Summer Camp. Each block is different yet when united together with thread, it is those differences that create the great strength and beauty in the quilt. This quilt representes the fabric of the lives of all Americans.Created By
