This portrait of a multicolored figure with its hands exposed is painted in Eddy Mumma's signature style. The simple figure is composed of vibrant colors that imbue the it with life and vitality, despite the simplicity of its form. The piece is enclosed in a blue-green frame. The back of the canvas has another painting by Mumma, as it was his practice to use both sides of the canvas in order to save money on art supplies. The back of the canvas depicts a tree, flowers, and the signature "Eddy" in the top left corner. The tactility of the bright and thickly applied pigment render the painting almost three-dimensional.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
