Description

Purvis Young's work is often marked by a combination of painted surfaces assembled together in an urgent and spontaneous style of collage, as evidenced in the technique he used for Reaches for Better Time. The painting's different surfaces are covered with images of wild horses, one of several representational figures Young used to symbolize life's many experiences. Specifically, horses came to represent the hope associated with freedom of escaping the conditions of a hard, urban environment.

Purvis Young (1943-2010) Purvis Young is a self-taught artist from Overtown Miami, Florida, who, having researched art history extensively says he is influenced by Van Gogh, Picasso, and Rembrandt. Young's vibrant paintings often show the streets of Overtown with "graffiti-like repetitive images" of traffic crowds and hovering angels. His angels represent hope, he uses wild horses to represent freedom, and eyes to represent "the system". His style is naïve, expressionistic and symbolic.
