2018.4.4Description
This painting of boats on a seascape is an atypical subject matter for Mr. Eddy. Prior to Mumma's focus on singular portraiture, he often drew inspiration from Western European art history. This influence is present here, with this work possibly recalling any number of 16th century marine paintings. Two ships are displayed, with the one on the right tilted haphazardly in a way that is consistent with Mumma's affinity for abstraction. His bright use of reds and greens is seen here, as well as attention to clothing through the passengers' large, bright hats and shirts.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
