2018.4.5Description
Typical of his later, more recognizable works, Mumma presents the viewer with a strikingly straight-forward portrait of a regal figure. Mr. Eddy was well aware of the power of clothing and costume. Here, the orange figure dons a ruff collar layered over white with the same orange used for its face and hands. The figure wears an admiral blue hat that spills out of the frame as his large, emerald eyes confront the audience directly, as if to demonstrate the subject's absolute confidence and status. Here, Mr. Eddy's signature becomes an element of design as it merges with the image through placement and repeated colors.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
