2018.4.7Description
This painting is illustrative of Mr. Eddy's exploration of color and material. Thick, textured marks create visible rifts throughout the work, perhaps a result of painting over a previous work. There is a distinct layering of colors: the comb-like hands typical of his portraits are pink with underlying orange, as well as the face. The figure's hat and buttons appear to carry both black and green, while the jacket contains a layer of gray that could have been added later. There are tints of orange throughout the painting that suggest an overall layer beneath. With Mumma's consistent attention to clothing, it is unsurprising that some of his works contain this kind of masking that could indicate he would paint the figures themselves and then "dress" them with overlapping colors.Collection

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
