2018.4.8Description
Perhaps one of Mumma's earlier works, this painting is a signature of Mr. Eddy's work in its subject. The figure's clothing suggests some form of a war general, with a large bicorne hat and shoulder pads that were typical of the outfits worn by European generals depicted in history paintings. Mumma's classic hands across the chest are not shown in this figure, instead they are present in form directly above each of the figure's shoulders as though the figure is raising his arms in surrender. This delineates Mr. Eddy's early interest in the shape and form of hands.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
