2018.4.9Description
This portrait is distinct in many ways in comparison with Mr. Eddy's overall body of work. A half-length portrait, absent of Mumma's characteristic hands, shows the audience a figure that is almost entirely red with the exception of black and white detailing on its clothes. The figure wears a loose beret on its head, more casual than the headwear adorning many of his other paintings. The shape connecting the eyebrows and nose contain a curvature unusual to his other paintings, and the figure's open-mouthed, white smile also present a unique feature on the portrait. The figure's rounded head and stylistic differences suggest the work is one of his earlier paintings, as he began to grow a fascination with portraiture and abstraction that was not honed into his trademarks.Collection

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
