2018.4.11Description
A full-length portrait, uncommon to Mr. Eddy's pattern of work, takes up a majority of the canvas with a luxuriously decorated outfit. While many of Mumma's figures are androgynous, his implementation of clothing often implies status and gender. Here, the figure is dressed in a long white skirt bespeckled with red, a vibrant orange and red shirt, and what appears to be a matching scarlet shawl. There is also a black hat on the figure's head, and sections of fabric-like shapes in the upper corners of the work that echo the colors worn by the subject. The assumption can be made that the figure is a woman, likely an older woman, wearing traditional clothing as indicated by its style and lavishness. Although the work has a white background, the right side is decorated in orange in order to accentuate the large signature, whose "d's" are filled in with red, recalling the pattern on the woman's skirt.Collection

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
