This piece is typical of Mumma's body of work, although it lacks his signature. His characteristic half-portrait is conducted with a purple-tinted red face and large, abstracted hands. Bright yellow curls surround the outskirts of the figure and correspond with the collar of the shirt; at times the paint blends with other colors, creating a dark, nearly brown color. The figure's purple buttons are outlined in thick black paint echoed in the recognizable geometric form of the facial features, particularly the stoic mouth of the subject. Stark blue eyes gaze directly at the viewer, confrontational yet detached.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
