This painting represents an unusual subject matter for Mumma. A horizontal landscape depicts a house painted in blue and green, with numerous windows and a red chimney adorning the flattened building. The background contains yellow-orange autumn foliage and a body of water. The painting does not feature Mr. Eddy's recognizable signature, indicating it may be one of his earlier paintings. While this work is not directly linked to a particular historical artwork, it is reminiscent of Van Gogh's landscape paintings of houses and farmlands. Mumma admired and recreated several Van Gogh paintings, most notably his self-portraits. It is likely he was inspired by works such as "Houses at Auvers," by Van Gogh for this piece. Mumma also spent much of his adult life on a farm, a possible inspiration for the subject matter of this work as well.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
