Likely an early exploration into what would become the characteristic subject matter of Mumma's paintings, this work portrays a half-length portrait of a figure with salmon-colored skin wearing white clothing and headgear. The figure has Mr. Eddy's recognizable comb-shaped hands, as well as the pronounced facial features. Thick, white eyebrows are congruous to the white outfit and background of the piece. Layers of paint create a textured, combined color scheme including red, white, green, and black. The outlier becomes the turquoise eyes of the figure, brilliant against the surrounding white of the eyebrows and what appears to be a hat. Mr. Eddy's signature is absent from the work.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
