This work by Mr. Eddy is a half-portrait executed in a slightly divergent style than that of Mumma's body of work. The figure in this portrait lacks the oversized hands that frequents his paintings, and its overall disposition is softer and more rotund than usual. Where clothing tends to play a major role in Mumma's works, this figure wears a uniquely modern outfit including a blue suit jacket with red pockets, a matching tie, and a yellow-green collar. The figure's red face bears a loose, open-mouthed smile and its body is haloed by a light blue, red, and navy outline. The outline takes up a large portion of the work, creating an angelic, delicate framing of the figure. The light blue and nearly ethereal nature of the halo is reminiscent of the historical representation of the Madonna. Mr. Eddy's signature is prominently displayed on the left-hand side of the painting, created in the same red as the figure's accents.Collection

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
