This painting portrays a three quarter portrait of a figure in loose brushwork with a red face and torso, a thick blue outline (perhaps a cloak or other article of clothing), and darkened hands. The painting does not have Mr. Eddy's signature on it. In this portrait, the clothing becomes more obscure compared to other works by Mumma. The figure has two blue buttons on its chest, but the article that becomes distinctive is the layer of smalt surrounding the figure. With an affectless expression and typical thick line work, the figure surveys the audience with intense blue eyes and a crouched, nearly hidden position.Collection

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
