Mumma's fascination with vivid colors, opulent wardrobes, and straightforward portraiture are easily observable in this work. This half portrait is rendered in a radiant green for the face, eyes, and ruff collar. The hands, cloak, and top hat of the figure are done in a plum red shade, while the background and shirt are a stark white. The figure's mouth is minutely circular, giving the figure a slightly surprised expression. This is further emphasized by the large, linear eyebrows: one of which is highlighted with a white streak underneath. Unlike many of Mr. Eddy's portraits, the eyes are painted in the same shade of kelly green as the face and collar of the figure. However, their intensity and attention are as unmistakable to Mumma's body of work as the "Eddy" signature on the upper left corner of the painting.Collection

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
