This horizontal portrait is unusual for Mr. Eddy's work both in its subject matter and execution. Although it is a facial portrait, a key element to many of Mumma's paintings, the figure's body, hands, and general clothing are absent or obscured by a neon green and purple encasement that resembles an astronaut's suit. The figure's eyes are the same color paint as a majority of the suit, and the figure has no hair but a black wrapping around its head. Its mouth is open in a wide 'o' and there are hints of a green paint beneath the figure's right eye that is used nowhere else in the painting. The background is black paint layered over a textured white surface, creating what could be an outer space setting for the potential astronaut.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
