This work demonstrates Mr. Eddy's interest in painting and his exploration of its capacities. Self-taught in the latter half of his sixties, much of Mumma's supplies came from friends who were eager for his artistic practice. In this piece, we see a wide variety of colors, indicating it was executed during his more confident years as a painter. The textural application of the paint reveals a number of layers within the figure: the green, red, and black are all interspersed underneath one another, present in thin lines on the borders of the uppermost layer. The clothing on the figure resembles winter layering, with a scarf and cloak over a burgundy jacket with matching buttons. The figure's stark white face emphasizes the layering in the face and mouth, creating a harmony between the number of colors. Even the figure's luminous green eyes and salmon pink cheeks become unified amongst all of the layers. Mr. Eddy's signature is on the left-hand side, d's together to reflect the o's in the eyes and cheeks.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
