Executed in Mumma's signature style, this painting depicts a half-portrait of a simplified figure. The color scheme used in this painting is present through multiple of Mr. Eddy's paintings, with the figure's face and large hands in red while its scarf, buttons, and eyes are a light blue. The hair and facial features are painted with thick black, and the eyebrows on the figure are thicker than is usual for Mumma's depiction of faces. The figure also has a highlight of white beneath each eyebrow that is the same color as the background of the work. There are streaks of white between the figure's simplified hands that creates a more comb-like shape for them.Artwork Details

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986)
Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.Created By
