Description

Much of Eddy Mumma's work consists of abstract portraits focusing on faces and hands. This frontal portrait features a wide-eyed male with long black hair, an orange face, and red hands. He is seen wearing a white shirt with red buttons and a blue bow tie. The frame surrounding the piece was attached to the board before the artist started painting and is, therefore, original. Typical of early Mumma style, this work is unsigned. Its rich concentrations of color bring attention to the subject's large blue eyes against the complimentary orange of his face.

Edward "Mr. Eddy" Mumma (1908-1986) Edward Mumma was born in Milton, Ohio, and after his wife's death in 1966 retired to Gainesville, Florida. Most of Edward Mumma's work consists of abstract versions of portraits focusing on faces and hands. His portraits almost always depict the same close-up, expressionless round face, with variations of colors, hand placements, and dress. Often, Mumma painted on both sides of his canvas or board paintings, and crudely framed them with scrap wood or plastic.
