Description

This portrait features a green-skinned figure wearing a spotted garment and a furry headdress. The grey headdress is almost wolf-like, with pointed ears and is textured with strokes of browns and blacks against grey fur. Tolliver used a reddish-brown paint for the figure's nose in contrast with its green, expressionless face. Mitchell Kahan, the former curator at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, couldn't help but notice the element of humor within a lot of Mose's work. He pointed out that, "…the naiveté of the improbable and bizarrely constructed animals is comical in a charming way."

Mose Tolliver (1920-2006) Born in Alabama in 1920, Tolliver claimed to have been creating artwork his entire life. His images are created on house-paint encrusted pieces of plywood and include sexually explicit images of women, self-portraits, buses, birds, snakes, and fruit. He would attach these images to the tab of a soda or beer can as a hanging device. As the years progressed, Tolliver became less dexterous and began to train his children to carry out his works.
