Description

This piece consists of two "framed" scenes. The top scene features a large central figure, shown pregnant, surrounded by smaller figures. Scraps of green carpet nailed onto wood frame the scene. The bottom scene shows several figures on horseback in black and white, also "framed" by wood strips. At the start of his art career, Purvis Young spent a lot of time at his local public library searching through art history. His work shows his inspiration from artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, and Rembrandt.

Purvis Young (1943-2010) Purvis Young is a self-taught artist from Overtown Miami, Florida, who, having researched art history extensively says he is influenced by Van Gogh, Picasso, and Rembrandt. Young's vibrant paintings often show the streets of Overtown with "graffiti-like repetitive images" of traffic crowds and hovering angels. His angels represent hope, he uses wild horses to represent freedom, and eyes to represent "the system". His style is naïve, expressionistic and symbolic.
