Description

Artist Mary L. Proctor utilized a double-paned window to create the dual scenes in this work. The bottom panel titled “The Last Supper” depicts a Jesus figure adorned in white robes sitting at the center of his twelve disciples. Traditionally, the setting of the last supper is portrayed indoors, but Proctor has depicted an outdoor setting with blossoming foliage and a small body of water in the right-hand corner. The Last Supper is a recognizable scene that has been repeated throughout art history across cultures and centuries. This event memorializes the New Testament account of the final meal that Jesus shared with his apostles before his Crucifixion. The top panel titled “The Comming Supper,” has Jesus sitting center stage with the same attire as in the bottom panel; however, now Jesus has a golden halo shining over his head. In this panel, he is accompanied by 26 figures seated alongside and across from him. Angels embellish the upper border of the windowpane. It could be inferred that this is a celebration taking place in heaven after the Crucifixion, and that the windowpane serves as a divider between the earth and the heavens.
