Description

This oil on canvas painting by Eluster Richardson features his mother, Amanda Richardson. Starting in 2004, Eluster began documenting his mother and her passion for quilting in a series of paintings. In this portrait, Amanda is seated in a chair looking down at a quilt she is sewing. Her hands pull at the quilt to adjust the fabric. Amanda is placed on the left of the composition with her quilt filling the rest of the space, providing viewers a glimpse of her quilt design. Eluster paints a calm, geometric background filled with neutral purple tones. The simple background invites viewers to explore Amanda’s focus while practicing her craft. Speaking on his quilt series, Eluster stated that the paintings honor the legacy of his mother and her craft through his own craft of painting. He wanted to depict her passion with his passion, so that they both may live on together.
