Nancy Reid Gunn (1922-2007)
On July 9, 1922 Nancy Reid Gunn was born in Fort Worth Texas. She met her husband while studying at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. In 1948 they married and moved to Tallahassee for her husband's teaching job at Florida State University. Gunn came across an exhibit of Karl Zerbe's students. Soon after Zerbe had introduced her to encaustic painting which would become the focus of her career. In the 50's Gunn adapted the process for her personal studio using household items like a broom handle, a space heater, and an electric skillet. Throughout the 60's and 70's she became a popular local artist doing projects with the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. Her works helped establish the arts center and many of her pieces remain in LeMoyne's permanent collection. Gunn had to stop painting in the 90's as she started to lose her vision and died in 2007.Created By
