2020.1.5_OHDescription
In the late 1990s, Mark and Patsy Bates donated the Bell & Bates Building to the Gadsden Arts Center (later the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum), providing a beautiful and historic space in downtown Quincy to house the Center’s galleries and educational spaces. Bell & Bates was, and still is, Gadsden county’s oldest privately owned hardware store founded in 1902. Architectural details and building artifacts were carefully saved, so when the building underwent a multi-year renovation, the hardware store’s original Antique Octagonal Screw & Cabinet & Base was preserved.
Containing all 98 original drawers and porcelain pulls, this cabinet was most likely created by the American Bolt & Screw Company around 1903. It is a beautifully handcrafted piece of Americana that was a revolutionary design in how bolts and screws were accessed. The eight-sided fixture on an octagonal base was designed and patented by George W. Chaffin in Dayton, Ohio in 1902. The rotating topper allows customers to easily search for their desired hardware, and its compact design was convenient and took little space in an already overcrowded store.Collection
