Pair of separate braces: Berlin work, on fine, possibly silk, mesh canvas; all hand stitched. Shades of red, blue, yellow, orange and green fine wool worked in a floral stripe. Lined or backed with fine ivory moire ribbon whose sides are brought to the front as a binding. The front end was bound first. The back ends were each turned under atop the end of a wide elastic band ending in a white kid buttonholed tab covered with ivory silk. The front end is crudely sewn to a fancy-weave silk extension backed with ribbon and inserted into a wide brass buckle. Sewn to the buckle is a silk-covered leather base from which a pair of narrow elastic tabs hang at an angle, each terminating in small buttonholed silk-covered leather tab. Each has a narrow keeper made of narrow silk ribbon to keep the brace extension in place. 2 1/4” wide x 18 3/4” long minus the tabs.
Compare to 2002.191 to see that these were lengthened; evidence of the original position shows that the extension was higher so that it was originally concealed by the decorative strip, like the other example.Collection
