Description

Infant’s cap made of a thin silk with widely space fine cross ribs, a dirty cream color. Constructed of 2 side panels on either side of a central panel from front to back. Seams and edges covered with 1/2” silver lace, with an extra bit at the center front next to the edge. Edges bound with pink silk ribbon, also used for ties. Stitched with linen thread. The inside is lined with coarse cotton (microscope identified) printed with a dark black Indienne design, which under the microscope looks for all the world like paint, not dye (it appears to sit on top of the fiber and appears to be attached by means of a glossy binder; the imprint is crisp and neat- not bleeding or blotching as some early dyed colors tended to do). One side panel is pieced at the bottom.
