Description

Single shoe (escarpin), straight with fairly short, small Italian heel. Light celadon colored silk with angled side seams, back seam well-finished with double-stitched ribbon cover. Long pointed toe, rounded throat. Sole has sharp ‘shoulders.’ Marked inside with red ink, an unintelligible and lengthy label inside an oval, which has to be Chinese. The letters look like a Chinese version of English letters made ‘arty’ and the result looks like “STamacs Maire good Shoe”" Two inscriptions on sole: One reads: “Slipper worn by Mrs. John Dorr (Esther Goldthwaite)” [suggesting that only one slipper was all the writer had available] and “Property of M--y G. Be---y”
