Entirely hand-stitched boy’s frock coat. Made of cotton printed with op-art cube effect in brown and tan it has that look of having been pink or lavender once, but maybe not. Unlined. Waist seam, no side seam or dart, side back and center back seams only. Medium-length, flaring skirts with pleats and box pleats in the center back but no tails, per se. Wide pocket flap in the waist on each side, no pockets anywhere. Sleeves have modest fullness on top and gentle taper to the wrist that has a slit. The collar is almost a band but folds back with the front edge of the body to form a near-shawl effect, the front has two self-buttons at the waist. The seams are not overcast but the two side seams of the skirt are a version of a French seam, one allowance folded over the other and whipped neatly down, leaving the allowances free of the surface. This would seem to serve the additional purpose of a light stay or vane to give form to the skirt. The skirt is longer at the sides where the grain goes on the bias; it appears that the piece was a bit shy of the goods at the center back.Collection
