Description

Entirely hand-stitched fine linen shirt front with deep collar that goes all around the neck. It has two Mother of Pearl buttons at base. Deep slit opening edged with generous fine linen frill. The front is deeply gathered into neck (which has standard neck gussets) and at bottom into a pieced linen band that appears to be intended to tuck in. No closures on shirt slit. The proportions suggest this was worn with high-waisted pants.

Context

A popular solution for those who wanted to keep up appearances without the means to afford an extensive wardrobe.
