Context

Business name timeline: Jas. Fee (1874), James Fee & Bros (1875-1882), Fee Bros. (1884-1899), Fee Bros Co. (1905-1910), Fee Bros. (1911-1914) Jas Fee refers to the Fee Brothers of Rochester, NY. James, Joseph, Owen Jr., and John Fee were born to immigrant parents from Ireland. Their father, Owen Sr., came to America in 1835 and settled in Northeastern Rochester, NY. By 1847, Owen Sr. had opened a butcher shop with his wife Margaret McMahon and three children, James, Mary Jane, and Owen Jr. John Fee joined the family in 1848 and Joseph joined in 1850. In 1855, Owen Sr. died, leaving the family to manage the butcher shop on their own. Margaret and the children managed to transform the store into a saloon and delicatessen by 1863. By the time James, the oldest, was 25, had opened a grocery/liquor store and named it James Fee & Company. The business grew into a winery and import business. In 1883, after the death of their mother and brother, Owen, the Fee Brothers changed the name of the company to Fee Brothers. The business went through many changes over the years, including making it through Prohibition era restrictions. The business still exists in Rochester.
