Description

Entirely hand-stitched tailcoat made of fine black cashmere. Lightweight with interlinings showing. The collar is low and wide. The sleeves moderate with band cuffs. No buttons and no pockets. Rather low waist with slightly eased fullness in the tails. Front darts. Center back cut en fourreau. Tail shaped to narrow straight bottom. The edges of the M-notch lapels are carefully turned to the back and whipped to the face. Raw edges butted. Speculated to be entirely lined with late 19th-century black silk with woven figures suggesting a watered silk pattern. Weighted because it is quite brittle. The upper front and sides are padded with hand-quilted silk and wadding. Sleeves lined with ivory satin. Pocket in the lining of the tail. Self-covered buttons.

Notes

Fox began his business in 1841. His goal was fine quality at a low price. He became extremely wealthy with this. Edward Fox, since 1841 the proprietor of the City Cash Tailoring Establishment at 202 Broadway, embarked on a campaign to refute 'the impression that has heretofore existed in the minds of many that purchasers in Broadway are obliged to pay an exorbitant price for an article of dress.
