Description

Two piece dress made of tan rep (silk wrap and cotton weft). No evidence of tapes used to shape either piece into puffs. Unusual long 'coat' effect. Top (a) - cut in the form of a coat with very long curved 'tails' and princess lines accentuated by applied self-bands from the shoulder around to the bottom of the coat. The front parts over a hip-length faux vest. High round self-bound neckline; self-covered dome buttons, lacking one at very top. Wide bell sleeves with self-band borders, drawn to a soft pleat near base with a self-bow. Skirt (b) - made of angular panels with slight train, proper left side front placket, in-seam pocket on the right. Hem has deep facing of brown glazed cotton, self-bias bound hem. No unpicked lines or folds giving evidence of pleating or gaugling; presently has a brown glazed cotton lining casing on the back portions and turned over casing made of the ottoman in front, with a tape drawstring. Probably had sets of deep pleats.
