Description

1) Silk plush top hat with narrow black grosgrain hat band. Underside of brim is also silk plush. Lined with white stiff paper at sides above black leather head band, and colorfully striped silk in top. Printed gold eagle cartouche label: Bent & Bush 50 Central Street, Lowell — Corner Court & Washington Street Boston. Marked with name, A. O. Shaw twice. Date of 1853 marked on each side and twice on top. 2) Case and lid made of tan cowhide decorated with brown painted lines. Heavy sculptural leather handle in brass fittings. Circular lock with semi-circular hasp attached to strap that passes across the lid and is anchored on opposite side. Top fits over flange on angled bottom. Lined with 4 kinds of cloth, chiefly a small blue floral print and a blue stripe. The ring upon which the hat brim rests is removable, revealing the cylinder in the center which receives the crown, and a space all around for storing.
